Why It Matters: Etching is an aggressive chemical process, and leftover electrolyte residue can become a corrosion initiation site if not neutralized. Every etched part needs to be neutralized after marking — and following up with a rust-preventive oil (RPO) provides in-plant protection for parts afterward.
Application Methods:
- Wiping — A pad saturated with neutralizer wipes the part; because the pad accumulates electrolyte faster than neutralizer over repeated use, a fresh disposable paper towel (or similar) should be used after each wipe to avoid reintroducing electrolyte and causing corrosion.
- Soaking — Parts are submerged in a neutralizing solution formulated to counteract the electrolyte. Solutions are typically diluted up to 15 parts water depending on application; soak time is roughly 10 minutes, reducible with agitation. Following up with RPO further guards against corrosion.
