Monode does not sell commodity stamps. Every stamp, die, and piece of stamping equipment we ship is made in-house, from raw bar stock through heat treatment, engraving, and inspection, using a process refined across more than seven decades.

What to Know Before You Order a Steel Stamp

Steel stamping looks simple: a hardened piece of tool steel with a raised character face, driven into a part by hand or by machine. But the decisions behind a stamp that performs correctly, versus one that chips, mushrooms, or cracks a part it should not have touched, are not obvious anymore.

Most buyers today do not have easy access to the institutional knowledge that once made ordering a steel stamp routine. Here is what actually matters.

Character Orientation

Normal (Right Hand)

Characters read correctly as struck. Right hand is the standard orientation for the large majority of direct part marking applications.

Reverse (Left Hand).

Characters are cut as a mirror image, producing an impression that reads correctly from the opposite side.

Mark Profile

Mark profile is the decision that matters most, and the one buyers are most likely to get wrong without guidance.
A simple triangle outline

Sharp Face.

General-purpose profile combining strong legibility with durability. Standard sharpness ranges from a 60- to 90-degree included angle; custom angles are available. The right default for most industrial marking.
A truncated triangle outline

Low Stress (also called Aero Cut or Dot Face).

A more forgiving, radiused point of entry that spreads the impact load and reduces the risk of stress fractures in the metal's molecular structure. Low stress is the standard choice in aircraft and aerospace applications, where a sharp-face stamp risks introducing a microfracture a part cannot tolerate.

Flat Face.

A blunt profile that produces a shallower, wider character indentation. The right choice when a part will be painted or powder-coated after marking, since the wider character surface holds up better under a post-marking finish.
Choosing the wrong profile is not a cosmetic issue. On a load-bearing or flight-critical part, the wrong profile can be a compliance problem. On a part headed for a paint line, it can mean a mark that reads poorly once the coating goes on. Monode has a conversation with every steel stamp buyer to help determine the correct profile, and it is the one most commodity suppliers skip.

A proprietary edge in hardness.

Our heat treatment and formulation process is protected, refined, and unique to Monode. The outcome for our proprietary process speaks for itself: a harder, more precise stamp than commodity alternatives, with a lower cost per impression over the life of the tool.

Condensed characters, done right.

Fitting an unusual number of characters into a small marking area is a real Monode specialty. We have the experience and know-how to make sure the stamp works and lasts over time, and because we make every stamp in-house, we can customize it to your needs. If your part has tight space constraints and a lot to say, talk to us.

We recycle what everyone else throws away.

Send in your worn steel stamps and we will recycle them into new ones through annealing, regrinding, and re-engraving, which helps us pass the savings on to you. No commodity supplier offers this.

We will tell you when another method wins.

Monode offers every major marking technology, not just steel stamp. If dot peen, laser, or etch is a better fit for your part, we will say so before you buy the wrong thing.

Cheap Stamps Cost More the Second Time

A commodity stamp can look like a bargain until it is in production. Stamps that lose their edge definition after a few hundred impressions, that mushroom or chip under repeated use, or that simply cannot hold a condensed character set, end up getting replaced, sometimes mid-run. And a commodity supplier has no recycling path when that stamp wears out. You buy it, you use it up, you buy it again.
