UID and UDI sound alike and are easy to confuse, but they come from different regulators and apply to different industries. Both exist to do the same fundamental thing: give every item a permanent, unique identity that can be read and trusted throughout its life.

UID (and IUID) is the defense world. It governs how items delivered to the U.S. Department of Defense are uniquely identified and marked.

UDI is the medical world. It governs how medical devices are uniquely identified under U.S. Food and Drug Administration rules.
