Most vendors will tell you they "do traceability."

What they usually mean is that they can read a barcode. Real traceability is the ability to identify a single part, tie it to its record, and act on that record when something goes wrong, without pulling every part you have ever shipped.

Consider what unit-level traceability actually prevents:

A recall you cannot contain.

Defects usually surface long after the part has shipped, out in the field, when something fails and someone has to work backward to find every other part that could fail the same way. How well you can identify what you built decides how wide that recall goes. Lot-level identification means recalling the lot. Unit-level marking and logging means only recalling the parts that are actually affected.

A mark that passes today and fails the audit later.

A readable mark is not the same as a compliant, verified, documented mark. Traceability closes the gap between "we marked it" and "we can prove it."
