What it is.
MIL-STD-130 is the U.S. military standard that governs how items delivered to the Department of Defense are identified and marked. In practice, it defines what identification information a part must carry and how that information is applied so it can be read by both people and machines.
Machine-readable and human-readable.
Compliant identification typically pairs human-readable information with a machine-readable Data Matrix that encodes the item’s Unique Item Identifier (UII).
Who must comply.
The requirement generally cascades from the DoD through prime contractors to their suppliers, so a supplier several tiers down can still be contractually obligated to deliver IUID-compliant parts.
How the mark is applied and survives.
The identification must remain legible and verifiable for the life of the part, which is where marking method and material science matter. The right method depends on the substrate, the surface condition, and the part’s service environment.

A compliant mark is not just present, it is graded and verified to confirm it can be read reliably.

to Your Contract
MIL-STD-130 defines how to mark. DFARS 252.211-7003 (Item Unique Identification and Valuation) is the contract clause that requires it. If this clause is in your contract, IUID is a deliverable, not a preference.
