MIL-STD-130 rarely arrives on your desk by itself. Primes issue their own derivatives of it (Pratt & Whitney's PW310 derivative is one example), and those cascade down through tier after tier of suppliers, each referencing further standards and specifications. The document that looks like 30 or 40 pages pulls in hundreds more through its sub-references.

What you actually need to know is narrow:

  • What has to be marked on your part
  • How the Data Matrix must be encoded
  • How the mark gets verified
  • How it fits your production process

Getting it wrong is expensive.

A non-compliant or failed mark on a high-value defense component can mean a scrapped part, a failed inspection, audit exposure, and program delay. The cheaper marking method that introduces micro-fractures in high-stress metal, or a mark that will not verify to the standard, is the one you end up paying for twice.

DFARS 252.211-7003

The contract clause that flows item-identification and IUID requirements down to suppliers. If it appears in your contract, your parts have to carry a compliant unique item identifier.

IUID / UID
