MCPP-N: Part marking support for IUID in Norway

Challenge - The Department of Defense searching for a way to have the IUID policy expand to the NATO community for their standardization agreement (STANAG).  A Monode employee who was retired from the USMC suggested the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway (MCPP-N).  The concept that made this more promising was that the equipment was American on Norwegian soil.  The focus was to use the "seek and apply" approach with anodized metal labels to the outside of the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) without any change to the surface.  If this could be accomplished no engineering revisions would be necessary for this application.

Solution - The MTVRs were located in caves that had a cold consistent temperature and were coated with a Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) paint.  Traditional adhesives could not survive the initial bonding process.  Two solutions were engineered to solve these conditions:

  • A new adhesive was invented that could bond and withstand the environment the MTVRs are subjected to.
  • A new style of anodized plate was used that has a better resistance to UV effects and overall wear

Results - The following was accomplished:

  • First known USMC marking and data submission to the DoD IUID registry
  • The Norwegians were trained in the final processes.
  • Monode team members won the UID Excellence Award for the work done
  • STANAG 2290 was published adapting UID policy for NATO countries
