How to Choose the Right Handheld Readers

Handheld readers are not one-size-fits-all solutions. The right reader depends less on brand preference and more on what the reader needs to actually read and where it needs to work. As a starting point:

1D barcode readers

Best for straightforward linear barcode reading in lower-complexity environments.

2D and Data Matrix readers

Best for reading dense, small-footprint codes like those required under MIL-STD-130 and similar UID marking standards.

Stacked symbology readers

Best for applications carrying more data per mark than a single barcode row can hold.

Handheld Readers vs. Smartphones: Why Readers are Better for Business

Monode's engineers are often asked whether a smartphone could substitute for a dedicated handheld reader. Usually, the answer is no. Today's smartphones can do a serviceable job reading some barcodes under optimal conditions, but they are typically not suited to the demanding conditions and security requirements of a manufacturing workflow.

Form factor.

Dedicated readers come in form factors suited to specific applications (supermarket-style, wired, wireless, data input, inline). A smartphone is a one-size-fits-all rectangle, which can mean an awkward fit against a complex part.

Out-of-box readiness.

Handheld readers are ready out of the box to read 1D, stacked, and 2D codes using the best available methods and algorithms. Smartphones typically require downloading multiple apps in search of one that reads the barcode at hand.

Security.

Handheld readers are dedicated devices with real security options. Smartphones are more exposed to hacking, and barcode-reading apps are not subject to security audits. If the phone is employee-owned rather than company-owned, that adds another layer of risk.

Industrial-grade lighting.

Readers offer multiple lighting angles and colors for an optimum reading environment. Smartphones typically have a single on-board white LED.

Ruggedness.

Readers come in a range of ratings, some waterproof and drop-rated for repeated factory-floor use. Smartphones are comparatively fragile.

Speed.

Readers are typically benchmarked to read a barcode within milliseconds. Smartphones can take up to 30 seconds per read depending on conditions.
